Can I just oo and aah again about how beautiful these purples, pinks greens and blues looked inside the white interior of the Stonegate Mansion?
Photographer geek out moment…
If I may be honest, this was one of the most difficult lighting situations I have had in a long time — I definitely had to summon some serious flash experience for this one. Exposing for the colored wash (that’s the walls being covered in a color), that’s something we do on a weekly basis, in just about any reception room that employs up-lighting. On any given wedding day, we may have a DJ bring one or two mover lights – but there were like a bazillion – those are what you see in the back of the room on the black stand. And just as their name implies, they … move. When you see a photographer employing off camera lighting – that is, putting a flash on a light stand, that flash is stationary and we know about the general angles that you can shot towards it without it giving you back a glare akin to a bright line shining in a very dark space. And not only were these guys moving, but they were changing colors! So we employed some patience and a lot of flash magic to bring in the ambiance of the room and to give all of the guests the right skin tone (believe me, without flashes, the would have been pink, purple, green and blue!). Sometimes at the end of the day you say “Phew. Thank goodness I shot theater shows and I brought extra flashes!”
