Seven a.m. came very early in Kentucky. I was already an hour ahead of my normal time zone and guilty of staying up late watching HGTV in the hotel rooml. I sat in the lobby holding my lighting rig and smiling, wondering if I should wire myself up with caffeine or not. I decided not to, I don’t think anyone could handle ‘caffeinated Lynn’ at 7am.
We caravaned to Spindle Top, a lovely estate in Lexington, Kentucky commissioned by a Texas oil tycoon. Ah, a little Texas in the heart of Kentucky 🙂 I had made it a point to not visit Spindle Top before the photo shoot because I wanted to treat it as a completely new and foreign locale. I talked about what to look for in terms of light and location while stressing the importance of scouting a location if you have the opportunity to do so.
Our gorgeous model was Christy, Mrs Kentucky 2009. You could instantly tell that she was lovely both inside and out and just a treasure to photograph. I began explaining how I pose and interact with my clients. If you have seen me shoot, I was on my best behavior, promise…
It was pretty cloudy and I was dying to get this one perfect streak of sunlight through the trees. We waited for a few minutes for the sun to peek out and when it didn’t cooperate, we faked our own sunlight using my flash rig.
Same image, but all natural light. Two very different looks that you can achieve quickly and easily on location.
Field? Yes, please! The sun was at full force again the next three are all a combination of backlit sun + off camera flash. My favorites, really, because it’s that perfect combination of natural and artificial light living in harmony.
Anyone care to guess the lighting for this one?
