When I started as a photographer, you wouldn’t be able to find me in front of the camera. No way, no how, no matter how much Dr. Pepper was involved. I remember having to have a headshot taken for the newspaper, and waiting until the last day with Jason (photo editor at the time) still having to coax me into it. There’s about two whole images from those early days. One was taken candidly as I held an off-brand flash in my hand, deeply pondering its ability to sync with my Canon camera, and the other is of my rear with a sign on it : I was both shooting and recruiting for the newspaper that day on campus. Multi-tasking at it’s finest.
And then one day all of that changed. I was recruited to model for David Beckstead at the 2010 photography convention in Nashville and it was fun. So much so that one day of dress up turned into three. And I was shot by oodles of my closest friends and most respected colleagues.
At this year’s convention in San Antonio, the ideas began popping up early on – I would have my car and the ability to pack it solid full of lighting equipment and some outfits. But most of all – I would have the one thing in the world that Nathan loves more than me – the car!
And I called Brian Mullins, who is based of Raleigh, North Carolina. I just knew he would be perfect for the session and it doesn’t hurt that he has an almost unequaled obsession with the car.
So there we were in January, in San Antonio, on a rooftop. It was an amazing 70 degrees (thank you, crazy Texas weather). Brian, with the lighting support of Daniel Lane, (Columbia, South Carolina) and Ryan Brenizer (New York City, New York) made the experience amazing.
And Brian’s images? Well, they left me speechless. They were so much more than I could have ever hoped for.
But my experience didn’t end there. Brian sent me the images and a preview print in a gorgeous box. Is this what’s it like to have professional images taken? Well, wow, just wow.
